EMPOWERMENT & WELLNESS | Three sneaky ways to up your hydration game

If you're anything like me, you probably find it hard to get enough water during the day without finding it an absolute chore.

On days where I have shoots and weddings, I sometimes find I can get in the zone for an hour or more without even thinking about hydrating. Sooner or later if I start to dehydrate, my energy levels flag and I get super dry and parched.

It’s a no brainer really. If you get dehydrated, your body pulls water from your tissues and skin to maintain the concentration in your blood. This causes skin cells to sink and sag, causing minor wrinkles to appear more prominent than they are and your skin to have a less than fresh tinge. Your eyes look sunken, your skin feels dryer, and it’s not going to be as elastic, so you will look a lot older. Nice.

So, how to get more in? Here's 3 sneaky ways.

Keep it in front of you

Out of sight, out of mind, right? Try keeping a glass on your desk or a non-BPA bottle by your side wherever you go to ensure you get your fill throughout the day.

Sip on herbal teas and warm water with lemon throughout the day (make sure it’s all caffeine-free though, or you’ll be doing it all in vain!) Also, take a glass to bed with you and gulp that sucker down before you shut your peepers, or first thing upon raising your beautiful dream-filled head from your pillow.

Try using an app

I know, drinking water can be more than a little boring! If you’re finding it hard, try downloading an app like Waterlogged (for iOs) or Drink More Water! (Android) to remind you to keep up your water intake, or scout around for a bottle with markers that tell you how much water you should have consumed by a certain time to keep you on track.

Think outside the box

In our quest for sneaking in water, one verrry underrated way of upping our aqua intake is to eat it! In the summer months, try snacking on foods with a high volume of water such a watermelon, apples, cucumbers, lettuce, celery, capsicum, etc.

In winter, try making some home made soups with water as the base and heaps of veggies added. Added bonus: it tastes good, and snacking on foods from the rainbow can help you get a wider range of nutrients and antioxidants, which are all super beneficial to your skin and your health in general.

You can also try making some non-alcoholic drinks that are full of the good stuff like soda water mixed with fresh berries and mint which taste waaaay more interesting than just plain water.

Try keeping a water bottle with you at all times, look to get water in different ways, and try downloading an app to gamify the experience of drinking water a little- guaranteed you'll be getting your fill in no time!
