7 Days of Self Care - Day six: Learning to deal with change

I don’t handle change too well, especially when I feel I have no control over a situation.  And what we're going through now is a seismic shift in our lives!  One that will change the fabric of our lives, our identities, our moral boundaries, the way we deal and cope with stress.

I'm on a mission to make a conscious effort to check my thoughts at the moment; because I've had a bit of a lightbulb realisation that for the past year and half I've been in an anxiety-driven hyper state of survival.

Sound familiar?

Truth is, my body cannot keep absorbing what my mind is processing.

When you’re running on fumes, caring for others can tax your already depleted resources to breaking point.

So, I'm trying really hard to change my perspective on things. To not focus so much on the things I CAN'T change, or don't have any control over; and instead, focussing on those things I can control- what I eat, how much sleep I get, how I move my body.

Checking your thoughts and actively working to change your perspective?  It can be paramount to dealing with major change.

In situations where we have virtually no control over the future and we can't really plan, we have to find things to do in the here and now to help us accept our circumstances and shift our mindset.

Accepting that there are things beyond your control, and choosing to be comfortable with that fact, is likely to bring greater peace of mind than fighting against what we cannot change or control.

View change as an opportunity to learn and grow, rather than as a setback, even if you have to fake it until you make it.

How to change your thoughts to more readily accept change

Think about the last time you were faced with a big change and got through it okay. Recalling these times can not only lower your stress levels, but also make you feel more resilient and upbeat overall

  • Remember that you’ve handled tough situations before

  • Write down a list of wins that have arisen from stressful situations you’ve conquered — from acing a huge presentation to making a big move to overcoming an injury — as a quick reminder that you have the skills you need.

  • Think of a list of people you admire that have been through hardship and adversity before- Frida Kahlo certainly comes to mind for me

  • Remind yourself that times are tough, but you are tougher

  • Being kind to yourself - it will help you stay calm during this difficult time, and ensure that you have the bandwidth for others

  • Reminder- you're a fighter. You're getting by, one minute, one hour, one day at a time.

  • Focus on getting by, and believing in yourself that you can

  • Remember that this will not last forever- it may not seem like it, but things will get more hopeful. They WILL.⠀

The age-old cliche - ‘this too shall pass’

This state of limbo may seem like forever but one day it will be but a small blip on your life map.

Remember that you are loved you are awesome and one day you will be that person again. You are resilient, strong and capable of overcoming hard things. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Even if it doesn’t feel like it, you can do this.

One day we’ll look back in this time, and realise this was our Teflon shot. The time that made us stronger than we ever imagined.

You might feel broken by the storm, but eventually, the storm will break.

Hang tough babes. It’s going to take every fibre of your being; dig deep into your marrow and find the reserve within.

You can do this, because you've done every other difficult thing in life before now and got through. See? Badass.

At Killer Queen, I love to focus on self love, self care and empowerment as a HUGE part of my brand values.

I bang on quite a lot about self love and self care because I know firsthand how important it is to take care of you- and the vital importance of “filling our own cup” first, before taking care of others.

I'm here to remind you that your life, your energy, your power, your time- has value. It's time to RECLAIM IT.

After months of running on empty and being in survival mode, it's time to love yourself more and begin to THRIVE once again.

I take a bold stand for women owning their throne and reclaiming their confidence, and I want you to come out the other side of this pandemic feeling stronger and more resilient than ever, and royally loving who you are.

Get ready for a dose of radical self love and care. The kind that will hopefully make you feel like you're on top, rather than sinking.
