7 Days of Self Care - Day one: Getting clear on your priorities

Women are often too quick to neglect ourselves, as we have an innate drive to meet the needs of others. Sadly, this is often at the expense of our own health, self esteem and wellbeing.

We’re shamed into thinking that focus on ourselves is indulgent, lazy and selfish.

Self-care is often the first thing that gets shelved when life is busy and stressful. People often equate taking time for themselves as being indulgent.

But looking after your own wellbeing will help you get through this challenging time, and will help you to better care for others.

So how the hell do we self care in a time of deep stress, anxiety, burnout and feeling like we're drowning?

Repeat after me: taking care of yourself is not a luxury! It’s essential. And during this difficult time, with kids at home 24/7, and stress at an all-time high, it’s more important than ever.

You need to put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others.

By prioritising self-care in your regular routine, you give your body and mind time to rest, reset, and rejuvenate, so you can avoid or reduce the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

Bringing more balance to your daily routine will help you be more productive and more resilient to stressors.

Take this 3 step approach to your self care routine to make sure you can factor this crucial act in to your routine:

1. Identify and plan

Take a moment to consider what you value and need during these difficult times of uncertainty. What are 3 things that would make you feel better today? How can you create time for these every day? Schedule time for yourself in your diary and commit to it. For example-

  • 45 mins yoga

  • 1 hour walking

  • having a shower or bath

  • walking around the block alone (or with your dog)

  • designating time to read

  • chill out time after the kids have gone to bed

2. Reflect and identify

When faced with challenges, we can use either positive coping strategies or negative coping strategies. How do you typically deal with life’s demands?

Work on reducing, and then eliminating, negative coping strategies.

For me, it entailed cutting down on the wine (note: I didn't say give it up entirely! That would probably induce MORE stress) and prioritising stress management through yoga, walking, supplements and breathing.

Ask yourself- are there barriers to maintaining your self-care? Examine how you can address these barriers. It might involve having a frank conversation with a partner or older kids about the need for you to have some time alone to focus on yourself, and for them to abide that. It might entail everyone in the family taking one or two extra reposibilities off your plate. Whatever it looks like, have those convos and make it happen. The people who love you should want to support you to be happy, healthy and not completely frazzled from burnout.

3. Plan  & implement

Start taking steps toward incorporating new strategies that will benefit your health and well-being.

Once you’ve determined your personal needs and strategies, write them down, put them in your diary, and make them happen.

Schedule your priorities like anything else you would schedule- commit it to your calendar and make it your mission to commit to that time daily.

You don't need to prioritise your  to-do list right now. Things are hard, they're upside down, they're beyond the scope of normal.

Concentrate on carving out some time every day to do something that benefits you right here right now. Everything esle can wait!

If you are finding things a bit much, remind yourself that it's MORE than okay to switch off and take some time for yourself to rest and recharge.
