BIZ TALK | What to wear for a photoshoot or branding shoot
It’s the million dollar question- eek! What do I wear to my photoshoot?
Picking outfits that look and feel great and represent YOU is daunting- I get it! It’s a lot to decide on, and a lot of pressure for a task that’s already a little nerve-racking.
The one word of advice I always repeat: choose items that make you FEEL GREAT. The more confident you feel in your chosen outfits will result in amazing photos.
If you’re really new to the game, time-poor, or don’t know where to start, a stylist is a great option; especially if you haven't had a photography session before or you're unsure about what to wear. They'll help you select your best options; the colours and styles that flatter you and tell your story.
If you're doing it yourself, go through your wardrobe and look at things that currently fit, are in great condition (no tears, stains or seams coming apart). It's best to bring a selection that represents who YOU are, that look great and you are comfortable in.
You'll want about 2 complete outfits for a headshot session, or a base outfit with some key items that you can mix in to change it up (say a different jacket or a change of accessories or shoes).
For a branding shoot, which is usually longer, bring a mix of outfits that represent different sides of you (ie casual, working from home, office / professional mode, unwinding, and maybe something flamboyant or colourful just for fun). You'll want about 4 or 5 outfits. Play around with base items like a flattering pair of black jeans or a great jacket- you can always mix and match different coloured tops with these, change the jacket, and add new accessories and shoes to give the outfit a different flavour.
Though tempting, don't wear anything that is too tight or you need to wear shapewear underneath! You will feel uncomfortable and this will be obvious in your expressions and poses. On the other hand, outfits that are too big or loose can result in you losing shape on camera. You want things that skim over your curves in all the right places and make you look streamlined. Play up your best assets!
If you're unsure about colours, stick with neutrals like black and white- they are classic and NEVER DATE. Don't choose too many prints that clash or look too busy as they can be distracting (unless that's your thing).
Think about incorporating your branding colours- being consistent with your branding will look amazing. Don't have anything to wear in those colours?
Consider wearing neutrals, and then adding accessories in that colour like some shoes, a scarf, or some earrings. You could even paint your nails in a colour from your branding palette. Pops of colour always look great, especially if you keep the rest simple.
