WEDDING MAKEUP | Tips for your wedding makeup and hair trial
It’s nearly your bridal trial!
Your trial (or preview as it’s sometimes called) is a great chance to test out some looks for your big day if you’re unsure. It’s also a great opportunity to get to know your stylist, and chat over any questions you have about your big day.
The trial is where we get to know one another and find out what your goals are and how we can make you look like the best version of yourself.
Booking in a trial to test out things you like and don't like is a great chance for us to get to know each other, your face shape, your skin type, and eye colour, and any special needs you may have or areas of concern.
It will also be your opportunity to bring in the pictures of styles you love and talk over things you like and dislike with us!
At Killer Queen, we offer in-depth trials to really get to know what you are after and customise a look that suits YOU.
We don't do cookie cutter beauty- it's about what suits you and the level of makeup you're comfortable with.
Sure, sometimes it may be a little more than what you're used to (so it looks amazing in your photos!), but at the end of the day I'm not about making you look like someone completely different. You want to look like you- but enhanced!
We've put together a quick checklist for you to help you get the most out of your trial.
Here is a basic checklist for your trial:
Bring along some photos of looks that you like and looks that you don’t like. Makeup is a very personal thing and your idea of natural might be very different to your makeup artist. You could also bring any images of yourself in your normal makeup style.
Remember also to be realistic! A LOT of photos you see online are photoshopped, and have had all the texture filtered out of the skin. Real skin has texture! And makeup cannot make bumps and lumps disappear! It can disguise, camouflage and enhance but it can’t make something that’s raised no longer exist.
Do not arrange your makeup trial within a few weeks of having any type of medical facial done, as your skin will be shedding dead cells and will in turn not be a true reflection for you. This goes for your big day- no harsh facials or peels before your big day- they can be very risky!
Aim to arrive to your makeup trial with no makeup on
If you can arrange for your hair trial to take place on the same day, it’s an added bonus to see the full look together.
Bring in a photo of your dress so we can see it and swoon! And ensure your look fits with the dress style.
For your hair trial, bring any hair accessories for the stylist to try out.
If you plan to wear fake tan for your big day, it’s a good idea to wear it to your trial if you can! Lip colours etc. can look very different with and without fake tan.
Wear a similar coloured top to your wedding dress for the makeup trial if possible. If you're wearing a dark top for the trial but not on the day this can really change the overall look.
Be honest about your expectations and speak up if you don't love the look you end up with! It’s so easy to make changes and adjustments as we go, and anything you’re unsure about we can explain and talk through. We don’t want you to leave unhappy, and won’t be offended in any way if you speak up and tell us you’re not sure about something.
Sometimes brides have more than one trial before they settle on a style they love. One way to alleviate this is to have a clear idea in mind of how you want to look on your big day, taking into account what suits you and what you’re comfortable with. If you are unsure and have 5 or 6 different concepts you like it can take longer to decide on a look. We’re here to help, so hit us up BEFORE your trial if you’re really unsure.
Take some selfies once you're done from every angle, to see how you’ll look in your wedding pictures and to everyone else. Remember to take pictures from a natural distance in order to get a “real” feel for how it will look.
Spend the rest of the day with that makeup and hairstyle to ensure it will hold up the day of your wedding.
There are tons of questions you're going to have about your wedding day hair and makeup- and that's more than ok! Write them down and take a list with you to your trial to go over with your stylist.
I always stress to my clients that communication is EVERYTHING!
If you go into your trial with a good idea of what you like, we can tweak and refine it to find a look you're 100% happy with.
We hope this guide helps you to maximise your time at your makeup and hair trial so that you feel ready and prepared for the big day.
We can’t wait to meet you for your bridal trial!
